Today we spent the entire day walking around downtown Kiev. It was a fun day, but we were completely exhausted by the end. We were walking the whole day, with only brief breaks to ride the Metro or a bus. And those buses were an adventure! There is no such thing as personal space here - and apparently a shortage of deodorant as well!
Anyway, we made it our goal to take our picture by every statue that we came across, and there were a lot of them! There are just random Communist statues everywhere and there are WWII monuments everywhere too. We include a small sampling throughout the post. But trust me there are a lot more. Click on a picture to enlarge it if you need to. It also drizzled on and off throughout the day and the humidity hovered around 99%.
Other things Natalie found interesting in Kiev:
1- Just because a road was built to have two lanes doesn't mean that is a rule. Up to 4 cars can "safely" drive side by side. There are no traffic rules.
2- Beer is much easier to find at a street vendor cart than water or coke. There is no such thing as underage drinking. We saw many high school students celebrating their graduation today with a beer and a cigarette.
3- Many bus drivers used to be taxi drivers and they seem to forget that a bus doesn't maneuver or fit in small spaces like a car.
4- There is no such thing as Diet Coke here. There is Coca-Cola Light but it is hard to find.
5- Never come here unless you can speak the language, or are accompanied by some one that can. You will not survive!
6- Everyone here smokes and talks one the phone ALL the time. One of our taxi drivers was texting while speeding down the freeway. Remember there are not rules against things like that here.
7- Sidewalks are not just for walking anymore. Feel free to park your car there as well.
8- Capitalism has really caught on here. Today I paid to use the bathroom.
