Well we made it to the airport in St. Petersburg. I should say we barely made it to the airport. We felt that the $40 a person fee to get a taxi to the airport was a little high and we had all morning to get there, so we took the metro and bus. We got though the metro ok and with a little asking found a bus going to the airport. The problem was that the 39 bus only goes to the domestic terminal or Pulkovo 1. Being on an international flight we needed Pulkovo 2. No one told us that there is no way to get from one terminal to the other.
Being the good money managers that we are we only had 100 Rubles left when we got to the wrong terminal. Asking a cab driver how much to take us to the other terminal he told us an amazing $40. The price dropped in half as soon as we said no. Lucky for us the conductor on the waiting bus jumped in and told us that if we got on her bus and then rode two stops and then crossed the rode and waited for bus 13 we would be able to ride to the correct terminal. We finally got on the right bus, but discovered that we were two rubles short of the 94 rubles that we needed. That is only a few cents, so we just handed over all the rest of our money and hurried off the bus!
Once at the correct airport, we needed to go through security to get to the check-in desks, wait in a long line and finally check-in. We then went through passport control. Finally, at the gate we went through a more thorough (standard airport) security checkpoint before being herded into a little glass room to wait to board.
The good part of the adventure was seeing more of St. Petersburg and some more WWII Siege of Leningrad memorials.
The downside of our adventure is that it added unnecessary stress. Come on who designs an airport with no way between terminals? Oh, yeah I forgot, the soviets designed this on. Vsyo Ponyat'no.
